Work Begins On The Mermaid

Building work commenced on The Mermaid this week, with its doors expected to open for pupils in September 2022. One of the largest building projects that Epsom College has ever undertaken, The Mermaid will transform the educational experience of all our pupils and equip them with the skills to succeed in the 21st century. Spread over three floors, The Mermaid will house classrooms, a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, study rooms, careers offices, a screening room and a large modern café and gallery.

The Headmaster had the honour of turning the first soil and getting the project underway.

Mermaid Facts & Stats

  • The Mermaid has been designed to be ‘green’ and minimise its energy use. It will use low and zero-carbon technologies, such as air source heat pumps and other forms of renewable energy.
  • At least 48,095 bricks will be used to build The Mermaid. Laid end to end this would reach over 10km.
  • The walls of the practice rooms will be deliberately angled to assist with the acoustics.
  • A time capsule will be placed into the foundations of The Mermaid. This will contain a selection of items showing what life is like at Epsom College in 2021, chosen by Lower School pupils and safely stored for future Epsomians to discover.

To enable the College community to keep an eye on the build, we have installed a time-lapse camera on the side of our Physics department – click the link below to view.

The Mermaid will cost £9.4 million. A significant percentage of this has been raised in donations and pledges from the Epsom College community. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact Helen Tranter, Education Trust Director, at or on 01372 821290.

“We are so very grateful to all of our donors for their commitment and continued support.”

“This exciting development has only been made possible through the generosity of our community,” said Education Trust Director, Helen Tranter. “To all who are sponsoring bricks, naming rooms or contributing in some way to enable us to build The Mermaid, we offer our sincere thanks and gratitude. The Mermaid will truly transform the facilities at the College and will provide our pupils with a new and exceptional environment for learning.”
