AV and Events Technician

Epsom College is seeking a skilled AV Technician who is able to deliver and support a wide remit in terms of both its audio visual and events commitments, during the College’s academic year, and during the holiday periods for the Commercial Events.

This position is responsible for helping to deliver technical requirement for both commercial and school led events, Commercial & Events Manager to ensure requirements are met and that high standards are maintained.

The College has a large concert space, a multi-purpose hall, a lecture theatre, two performing arts studios as well as a number of other meeting or performance spaces.  There are also plans underway to create a new recording studio in the Music department.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To provide AV technical support for all School and Commercial events, always ensuring a high standard of delivery, in consultation with the Commercial & Events Manager and Head of Music Technology and AV.
  • Maintain the music and audio-visual facilities for all events as required for each event.
  • Work together as a team to deliver a varied events programme across School and Commercial Departments.
  • Support and contribute to the Drama and Music Departments, ensuring that sound recording, and reproduction is of the highest standard for concerts and school productions (both spoken and musical).
  • Supporting the Music Department in the recording and production of pupil work as and when required.
  • Assist in filming and video editing of performances.
  • Supervising and training the pupils in the use of any sound systems and musical technology associated to their academic and co-curricular activities;
  • Assist with on-going routine maintenance of AV equipment, arranging for any necessary repairs and replacements, including PAT Testing.
  • To be the main point of contact for the duration of a School or commercial event, responding to any general or technical issues or difficulties in a professional manner as and when they arise, at the request of the Commercial & Events Manager.
  • Undertake the fixing of routine sound and projection problems in classrooms;
  • Ensure all aspects of health and safety are adhered to, ensuring these areas are properly managed;
  • Ensure all duties are carried out in compliance with safeguarding protocols and procedures;
  • Provide specific technical input into the design and installation of sound equipment for school events, ensuring the highest quality performance;
  • Work with the IT Department on various technical duties, both during term time and school holidays;
  • Provide technical support for school productions and associated events including the pre and post production works;
  • Assist with any necessary administrative tasks associated to the technician role, including maintaining stock levels for sound and media equipment;
  • Respond to day-to-day sound, audio and visual requests from staff and clarify AV requests arising from event bookings;
  • Act as Duty Manager role for events, meeting and greeting external clients and setting up Technical requirements.
  • Assist with any other reasonable requests in relation to the planning, setting up and management of College events.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • Proven experience as an AV technician in a similar setting or venue.
  • Strong IT and Media skills.
  • Experience using both PC and Mac.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of digital audio and audio-visual equipment and software and its use in relation to live, recorded and play-back techniques.
  • Demonstrate experience of providing high quality audio visual for live events.
  • Present a professional appearance and deliver high levels of customer service when representing Epsom College.
  • An understanding of health and safety procedures including undertaking of Risk Assessments.
  • A commitment to safeguarding protocols within a pupil focused environment.
  • Highly organised and able to work under pressure with proven experience in delivering for a busy event calendar, including evening and weekend work.
  • Display excellent communication and interpersonal skills and approachable manner with both non- technical and technical users.
  • Evidence of an ability to work flexibly as part of a specialist team.
  • Evidence of an ability to work using own initiative and to problem solve.

Desirable

  • Provide evidence of experience of working in an academic environment.
  • Present evidence of experience of sound engineering a musical production.
  • Provide evidence of experience in music production, using Logic Pro or Pro Tools
  • Demonstrate filming and video editing experience.
  • Provide experience of working with young people aged 11-18.
  • Skills and interest in either one or more of the following: Theatre production Lighting or Sound, Stage Management or Live sound.

Terms and Conditions

Hours

This is a full-time role, 40 hours per week, working across the school day and evening.  The school day operates from 8.20am – 6.00pm and 8.20am – 12.40pm Saturdays.   Due to the nature of the role and the school timetable the role will require flexibility with regard to hours of working to meet the demands of productions and events.  Epsom College is a boarding school which operates over a much extended week.  During term time considerable evening and weekend work is essential.  Time would be given in lieu of this at less demanding times during the academic week/year.

Salary

£31,725 per annum, full time throughout the year.         

Holidays

The holiday entitlement is 28 days holiday per annum inclusive of bank holidays increasing by 1 day per annum up to a maximum of 33 days per annum inclusive of bank holidays following 5 years continuous service for full time working, and pro rated for part time.

Pension

The College operates the Epsom College Automatic Enrolment Scheme. The Scheme is administered by the Pensions Trust.  Eligibility is based on statutory criteria.  If eligible, the Employee will be required to contribute a minimum of 5% of basic salary and the College will contribute 4% in compliance with current legislation.
